HUBLI: Captain Gopinath, chairman and managing director of Deccan Express, has said that it is possible to get the work done in government offices without greasing the palms.
Speaking at the release of `Baanayana', the Kannada version of his book `Simply Fly - Deccan Odissey', at BVB College here on Friday, he said one needs to have determination to get the work done.
Gopinath went on to explain about the hurdles he faced while getting a licence and space to set up the country's low-cost airlines and how he overcame those "without taking the immoral route". "At least four joint secretaries and three secretaries of civil aviation ministry had changed by the time I managed to get the licence __ after almost three years," he recalled.
"I was not getting one or the other licence. At one instance, I got angry and approached the secretary who told me that he has cleared the file a month ago and it is pending with a minister," Gopinath said, and added: "When I approached the then civil aviation minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, he asked me why I did not come earlier."
Citing another example of smooth sailing, Gopinath said: "There are impediments in every step to success, but people should develop the habit of overcoming them on their own."
With reference to the judicial inquiry ordered into the land denotification charges against the chief minister, Gopinath said the Lokayukta should be made independent by giving more powers so that it can even prosecute the CM. "Even the PM should be brought under Lokpal," he added.
In continuation of Ratan Tata's "allegation" that he was asked a bribe of Rs 15 crore by a minister to launch an airlines company, Gopinath said an airlines company then had paid a bribe of Rs 20 crore to ensure that the Tatas do not get the licence.
