G R Gopinath, the pioneer of low-cost aviation in India, is weighing acquisition of Mumbai-based Patel Integrated Logistics, two sources familiar with the development said.
Gopinath is said to have had fresh rounds of discussions after an earlier engagement did not bear fruit.
“Patel Roadways has been looking for a buyer for its integrated logistics segment for some time now,” said one source.
“There is a board meeting scheduled on January 29. It may move matters forward on a suitable buyer for Patel Integrated Logistics,” said one source.
Arif Patel, vice-chairman, Patel Integrated Logistics, in an emailed response said the company is “talking to many people for strategic tie-ups but there has been no discussion with Deccan 360 about any acquisitions,” he said.
“We are doing business with Deccan where it suits us and vice-versa,” Patel said.
Gopinath also denied holding talks with Patel.
Experts said for Gopinath, acquiring a company that already has a logistical infrastructure in place will help him break into the express cargo market, where he faces tough competition from established players.
One reason why Patel may be keen on the deal, said one source, is that it allows the company to concentrate on the flagship road transport business.
